Still so much to do

Phil has been working his little socks off at the Caldecotte flat, so much so, that he is making himself ill.  I am worried about him; I know he is a man on a project or is that a mission and he wants to do as much as he can whilst he can but he is really taking it to the limit.  I don’t know if he mentioned that he had a stinking cold over the weekend which is obviously as a consequence of an already weakened immune system.  The kitchen in the Caldecotte has been a challenge for Phil.  It may only be a small kitchen but it has not been easy.  Okay, Phil has made himself more work by replacing all of the electrics but actually they needed doing, there were far too few sockets and those that were there didn’t work.   Phil also didn’t make his life any easier by fitting lights above the wall units and into the plinths.  But that’s just Phil, or is it that he wants to highlight his lovely marble floor of which he is so proud of?  Who bloody knows but it has certainly given him extra work.  Phil / we have done a fair few kitchen refits over the years and we have been asked by friends and family to fit theirs but we have declined, because whilst Phil has the skill and generally does a good job, it takes him a long time to fit and he really doesn’t enjoy the work.  Plus, when you take money for a job done there is real pressure to make it picture perfect.

But the kitchen at the CF is looking good, all of the hard work is nearly finished.  There is still stuff to be done of course.  Tiling around the window and touch up paint and we also need to find Perspex plastic to cover over the wallpaper splash back.  We are still waiting on Snake to plumb in the washing machine and fit the taps on the kitchen sink.  The emersion heater is still f****d as is the power shower and we need to find a solution for the pressure of the water in the shower.  But without hot water, this can’t be sorted.

As to the other jobs in the CF, well there are still many I’m afraid.  We need to refit the bathroom warm air heater and replace the extractor fan.  The internal doors need to be brought, fitted and painted. We need to fit the electric wall mounted fire that we brought yesterday in the fireplace.  We have never done this before so it will be a first.  I’ve already tried (and failed) to get the fake fireplace out but it wouldn’t budge.  I won’t go into the nitty gritty, but I don’t lie when I say, there is still to do.

Whilst Phil has been working himself into exhaustion, I have had a relatively easy week.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not afraid of hard work but even with Phil taking over as project manager, there really hasn’t been much for me to do.  Sue stayed on Monday night for my birthday curry and on Tuesday at 9am I took her to the city centre for a laser eye free consultation.  She had to have eye drops and couldn’t drive; I was allowed to sit in and it was very interesting.  I would have it done myself but my eyesight is unstable; I was certainly impressed though and I think (but don’t quote me) that Sue is going ahead.  The cost was certainly much less than she’d expected.

I went round to the flat on Wednesday to repaint the kitchen where Phil had re-plastered and sanded.  I had planned to go to the gym afterwards but there was no time.  In the afternoon Phil drove me to Northampton because he knew I wanted to spend some of the birthday money from Phil’s mum. We parked at Morrison’s and headed for Primark, my favourite shop.  When I go to Primark in London, which is about once a year, I can buy a full wardrobe for about 80 quid, but you know what, I struggled in Northampton and only spent the total of roughly 18 quid.  The funny thing was, Phil loved Primark in Northampton and got himself shorts, shirts, knickers and socks.  LOL, he loved the place or is that the price???

Today we fly to Spain for the weekend.   It was going to be a fairly easy day just getting ready to go away and out for lunch but it’s not going to pan out that way. Rhona from Ampthill Glass phoned late yesterday afternoon to say that the glaziers would be going into the CF today at 8.30am.  This is good news but we really aren’t ready.   Also Phil has his zapping at 8.00am this morning so it just means that I’ll have to go to the flat and he’ll have to go to Northampton General by himself.   I wasn’t too fussed about going away this weekend but I am glad now that Phil booked.  The side effects from the radiotherapy are beginning to kick in and yesterday Phil had a really bad day.  I felt really sorry for him but there was nothing I could do.  His tummy was upset and his bottom was sore and stinging and probably not helped by curry on Monday and leftover curry on Tuesday.  The hospital did warn us about diet and what to eat and what not to eat but because Phil has been good up until now, we have been a little lax.  Not any more though, no more spice for Phil, he is burning enough inside without adding to the heat.  Yes, what my boy needs desperately is a break, if nothing else a break from working and a chance to relax and do nothing will do him the world of good.  Thankfully he is feeling a little better today.  We don’t fly until tea-time and between now and then there is a shit load of stuff that we still have to do. Best get going.

Next blog from me will be tomorrow from our apartment in Calas de Mallorca.
